Be prepared for blisters and cuts with a first aid kit. Whether you're birdwatching at the local state park or planning a hike at a local trail, basic necessities should be packed. Day hikers should carry a water bottle; dry snacks such as granola bars or trail mix; a small first aid kit containing band aids, antiseptic and aspirin; rain poncho; map; sunscreen; mosquito repellent; flashlight; extra pair of socks; compass or GPS; long sleeve shirt or shell; toilet paper; plastic bags; matches; binoculars; camera; and identification.
Overnight Camping

Camping is an inexpensive way to take a break. If you plan to spend the night at a National Park or local woods, there are essentials that you'll need to ensure a safe and comfortable night. Plan to bring extra fresh water and water purification tablets; maps and compass or GPS; dehydrated food and instant soup and coffee; a small pot; eating utensils, plates and cups; matches; a first aid kit; sunscreen; mosquito repellent; flashlight; extra pair of socks and underwear; rain poncho; long-sleeved shirt; toilet paper; plastic bags for taking garbage from the camp site; binoculars; sleeping bag; waterproof tarp; toothpaste and toothbrush; biodegradable soap; notebook and pen; camping permits (if applicable); and identification.

Typically, long-term backpackers stay at hostels or inexpensive hotels and use their backpack less for survival. It's still a good plan to have a set packing list filled with essentials. Plan to take your guide books; maps or compass and GPS; first aid kit; rain poncho; several pair of socks and underwear; flip flops; plastic bags; long-sleeved and short sleeved shirts; shorts and long pants; sunscreen and mosquito repellent; camera; binoculars; notebook and pen or laptop; a book to read; travel documents like airplane tickets and passport; flashlight; toothbrush and small toiletries; and a bedroll or sleeping bag.
