Recommended Packing List for a 100 Mile Hike in the Mountains

Going on a 100 mile mountain hike means having to sleep, eat and do everything else in the wild for at least a few days. As such, hikers have to pack a variety of items, ranging from basics, like food, to equipment needed in an unexpected situation. Hikers should also take into consideration factors like the climate and terrain of the area where they will be hiking when considering what items they should pack.
  1. Clothing

    • Hikers should pack clothing as needed. Some items are necessary, for example hiking boots, rain gear, a hat and a warm, preferably synthetic jacket, depending on the temperature. Gloves may also be required, as well as extra pairs of socks and underwear. It is recommended that regular clothing like pants, shorts and shirts are quick dry and synthetic. A bandanna may also be helpful.

    Food

    • Hikers have a variety of foods from which to choose and they should pack food that is non-perishable. They should ensure they have sufficient amounts of bottled water and a water purification system. Hikers can pack food that is quick and easy to prepare, such as instant rice, noodles, macaroni and cheese, instant oatmeal, instant soups and instant pudding. Hikers may bring meat in the form of pepperoni, bacon bits and jerky. They may also bring powdered milk and hard cheeses. Hikers can also bring a variety of snacks, including cookies, crackers, bagels, peanut butter, energy bars, hard candies and trail mix.

    Sleeping and Eating

    • Hikers should pack equipment that they need to sleep. A tent and a sleeping bag are necessary, preferably for a plastic bag to cover and protect the tent. Hikers should also pack an insulated ground pad to keep them warm while they sleep. Trekkers should also bring the equipment necessary to prepare their food. This can include a portable stove and fuel, matches or a light and cooking utensils such as cutlery. A knife is also vital, both for food and other uses.

    Other Items

    • There is also a variety of miscellaneous items that hikers should bring with them. These include things necessary for navigation --- guidebooks and maps, a compass and possibly a GPS device. It is also important to pack an emergency or first aid kit. Other items include insect repellent, toilet paper, headlamp or flashlight, a watch, sunscreen and a nylon rope. There are also optional items, such as entertainment devices and personal hygiene products.
