How to Make a Wooden Walking Cane

A wooden walking cane is an enjoyable accessory to have when taking a leisurely stroll or a nature hike. The cane allows you to relieve some of the burden of your weight while walking, as well as giving you a means to push aside thistles and other impediments. When walking with a group you can easily make yourself visible by raising your walking stick in the air. You can make your own unique walking stick from wood with very little effort.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the wood rod into the height that you need with a hand saw. The height depends on how tall you are and where your hand is when extended out to grasp the handle. Your walking can should be high enough that your elbow is slightly bent when you use it, but not bent enough that it forms a 90-degree angle.

    • 2

Sand the entire rod down with sandpaper until is smooth. The surface doesn't need to be even, but there should be no splinters or rough fibers.

    • 3

Make a handle for your walking cane. Cut another rod so that it is as long as the width of your hand plus 2 inches. Saw the rod with a hand saw. Sand the handle in the same way as you did to the cane stick.

    • 4

Place the handle on top of the cane to form a 90-degree corner. The rods should look like an upside down L.

    • 5

Lift the handle and apply wood glue to the underside of the handle and the top of the cane. Place the handle on top of the crane. Clamp the pieces together and leave the glue to settle for two to three hours.

    • 6

Drill through the handle and into the cane stick with a power drill. The screw should go at least 2 inches into the cane.

    • 7

Stain the cane and handle with a glossy wood finish. Apply as many coats as your specific product recommends.

    • 8

Wrap a 1-foot string of leather around the join of the cane and handle, knotting it when you're done. Cross the string up and over the handle to form a brace holding the pieces together.
