      Cut with a knife a sapling that is 2 inches in diameter. Choose a sapling that is at least 6 feet in length.

      Remove with the knife any limbs from the sapling. Smooth the sampling length to remove any rough spots.

      Shape with the knife the end of the spear into a point. Round the opposite end of the spear for safety.

      Place the sharpened point of the spear near the heat of a fire to harden the green wood. Monitor the spear point carefully and rotate the point so it will evenly heat.

      Remove the spear from near the fire after it has sufficiently hardened. Do not allow the wood to catch fire or begin smoking during the hardening process.
