How to Keep Feet Warm Outside

Keeping your feet warm when you are outside can help keep the rest of your body at a comfortable temperature. Keeping your feet warm also prevents frostbite, a serious condition that could damage both your toes and feet to the point of amputation. Simply wearing shoes and socks will not keep your feet warm while outside during winter, or when you're walking in the snow. The most important thing to remember is that dry feet will remain warm feet.

Instructions

    • 1

Put the right type of socks on your feet. Insulated socks, fleece socks, and “hunting socks” will keep your feet both warm and dry when outside. Avoid wearing cotton socks, as they trap foot perspiration, making your feet feel colder.

    • 2

Insert a sock liner inside the original sock. Sock liners, along with the right type of sock (as described in Step 1), keep any moisture that touches the outside sock from reaching your feet. Since you're wearing two layers of fabric on your feet, your feet also remain warm.

    • 3

Wear waterproof boots. As with the right pair of socks, waterproof boots keep water out of the boots and also keep your feet warm.

    • 4

Place toe or feet warmers inside the boots or directly on your toes. These items generate heat while inside of your boots, keeping your feet warm for several hours at a time.

    • 5

Always wear the right size of boots. Boots that are too loose let in snow and water, which makes the feet cold. Boots that are too tight may cut off circulation to the feet, making the feet colder.
