How to Keep Warm When Snorkeling

Snorkeling in cold water leads to the possibility of hypothermia and muscle spasms. Appropriate clothing is essential. A wetsuit -- which contains a layer of water within the suit -- is the best option for keeping warm. The body temperature of the swimmer heats the water in the suit, helping him retain heat.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a wetsuit suitable for the average water temperature in which you are diving. Ensure that your suit fits comfortably.

    • 2

Choose a wetsuit with a thickness of 2 mm for water temperatures above 85 degrees Fahrenheit, 3 mm for water between 70 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit, 5 mm for 60 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit and 6.5 mm for 50 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit.

Use a drysuit for snorkeling in water at higher temperatures. Wear a thick, fleece jumpsuit underneath the drysuit.
