How to Go Snorkeling

Our world is filled with beauty on the land and on the sea. When planning a vacation, plan an adventure that takes you off the usual path. Many tropical islands exist that contain beauty under the water. These tips on snorkeling safety are the first steps in getting to see the beauty beyond the surface.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a mask and put it on. Check to ensure the face mask fits comfortably and snuggly. Pull the mask's strap over the back of the head. Straighten any twists in the straps.

    • 2

Select and place the snorkel. Use a "snorkel keeper" or a rubber band to attach the snorkel to the mask. Make sure you can adjust the snorkel's position.

    • 3

Select your fins. Select either a full foot fin or an adjustable fin. The full foot fin is best for beginners. They are easy to use and good for learning basic moves near the surface.

    • 4

Place your fins onto your feet properly. Turn the heel inside out and slip your foot into the pocket of the full foot fins. Turn the heel upward. Test to be sure the fins do not pinch or hurt your feet or toes. Make sure the fins are not too loose.

    • 5

Prepare to practice in a pool or shallow water that is calm with no heavy boat traffic or big waves. Sit on the steps of the pool, the edge of the pool or a flat area of a beach close to the water. Put on the fins.

    • 6

Take baby steps. Step into the water and go to where you can stand comfortably. Slowly move to the shallow end of a swimming pool. Simulate the moonwalk if you are on a beach. Carefully wade into the water. Stop when the water is about waist deep.

    • 7

Try breathing through your snorkel. Lean face forward until your mask is under water. Continue breathing normally; make sure you are comfortable and breathing easily. Take your head out of the water and adjust the equipment if needed. Put the mask back on.

    • 8

Float face down. Kick your legs.

    • 9

Clear a flooded snorkel. Breathe in deeply and hold it. Push your head under water until you know the snorkel is under water. Move your head up until your eyes are at the surface. Blow the air out sharply and forcefully through the snorkel.

Look for a better view. Pick a sheltered cove or bay that has underwater rocks and a colorful reef. Continue to practice your new skill.
