Tutorial on How to Use a Compass

It is not always possible to have directional signs telling you which way you are going, such as when you are at sea, underwater or in the middle of the woods. Compasses are a navigation tool you can use to locate your direction, simply by utilizing a needle that points to the magnetic north pole. Learn how to hold and use the compass correctly so you can follow the correct bearing to your destination point.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold your compass with both hands directly in front of you, aligning the red lubber line down the middle with the center of your body. Keep the compass level so the needle turns when you do. Tilting it can sometimes jam the needle.

    • 2

Point the lubber line in your desired travel direction. Rotate the bezel to set the index marks (degrees) over the compass needle to indicate the heading. Follow the heading. If the needle leaves the marks, then you are off course.

    • 3

Set a reciprocal heading to go back the same way you came. Turn the bezel 180 degrees from the original heading. Turn until you center the compass needle between the index marks. You will be facing in the direction you came from.

Make a turn using a compass. Rotate the bezel the desired degree of turn. Turn until you center the compass needle between the index marks and follow the heading.
