How to Correctly Size a Backpack

Correctly sizing a backpack doesn't have to be a complicated process. However, it does involve taking the time and effort to make sure it does fit properly, including adjusting the shoulder straps, hip-belt, load-lifter straps and sternum strap. When these straps have been fitted, the pack will fit snugly and be more comfortable to carry weight. This is important for either short day-hikes or for longer backpacking trips.

Instructions

  1. Adjusting the Pack Straps

    • 1

Loosen the pack's shoulder straps, hip-belt straps, sternum strap and load-lifter straps.

    • 2

Pull the shoulder straps over each shoulder so the pack sits evenly and flat on the back.

    • 3

      Pull the shoulder straps snugly.

    • 4

Click the hip-belt together and tighten the hip-belt straps.

    • 5

Tighten the load-lifter straps and sternum strap.

    • 6

Look at the pack in the mirror. Make sure the hip-belt rests just above the hip bones and the shoulder straps are at a 45-degree angle. The pack must also feel comfortable.

If the backpack doesn't seem to fit, check the shoulder strap sizer, which is located on the pack panel that rests against the back. This allows the pack to be adjusted for different torso sizes. Also, check the hip-belt size as well. Most of the pack weight should be on the hips, not on the shoulders.
