A well-fitted backpack helps prevent aches and pains on your body when backpacking. Set up your pack ahead of time so you can prepare, adjust and practice fitting. This also allows you to get familiar with all its pockets, straps and other features. When your backpack is comfortable and well-adjusted, you can focus more on enjoying the natural wonders you came to explore.

Conform the fit of the pack to your body. Put in about 15 lbs. of weight to simulate a full pack, then adjust all the straps and hip belt so that they fit snugly and comfortably around your body. The hip belt should be resting over the hip bones with the padded sections wrapped around securely. Adjust the shoulder straps to wrap closely over your shoulder and to fit comfortably around your armpits.

Distribute the weight when loading the pack. When preparing for a backpacking trip, put the heaviest items near your back, centered between the shoulder blades. When backpacking on a trail, place the heavy items a little bit higher inside the backpack to help concentrate the weight over your hips, which are equipped to handle heavy loads. When using the pack off the trail, place the heavy items a little bit lower in the main compartment. This increases stability and aids in lowering your center of gravity when tackling uneven terrain.

Hoist the pack properly to avoid straining your back. Let the pack sit upright on the ground, then grab the webbing haul loop on top of the pack. Face the backpack and assume a wide stance with your knees slightly bent. Place the pack on your thigh, then slip your arm and shoulder through the shoulder strap. Push your shoulder in far, then smoothly swing the pack onto your back and slip the other arm through the second shoulder strap. Buckle the hip belt and cinch down all straps.
