1
Spread out all of your camping gear out on a tarp or the floor to make sure that you are not forgetting an important item. Loosen all of the compression straps on your backpack.
-
2
Put your sleeping bag into the bottom of the main backpack compartment, or into the sleeping bag compartment, if your pack has one. Stuff other lightweight items in the space around the sleeping bag, like camp shoes, clothing or a pillow. Place your sleeping pad in the space above the sleeping bag.
-
3
Gather small items together in stuff sacks so they do not get lost in the backpack. Put cooking fuel and your stove in one bag and kitchen utensils and seasonings in another.
-
4
Load the backpack from the bottom up. Place medium-weight items, like your stove, water filter and first aid kit, on top of the lightweight items and upward toward the middle and outside of your backpack. Keep the heaviest items, such as your tent, fuel, food and water, higher up and near your back and shoulder blades.
-
5
Place items that you use frequently or may need quickly in easy-to-access places. Use external pockets for items such as your trail map, insect repellant, toilet paper and rain gear. Put on the backpack and tighten all of the compression straps to keep the load from shifting.
