How to Pack Your Osprey Pack

Osprey is a Colorado-based company that manufactures backpacks with features designed to accommodate different outdoor sports. The primary purpose of the backpacks is gear storage, but straps and loops are included to store equipment for ice climbing and skiing. The company separates the backpacks into gender-specific categories to accommodate the different bone structure of males and females. Several of the backpack models include a breathable panel on the back to encourage airflow and prevent overheating.

Instructions

    • 1

Store your sleeping bag and clothing in the bottom of the pack. The sleeping bag and clothing are lightweight; Osprey packs allow access through the bottom compartment's zipper.

    • 2

Situate heavy items in the center of the pack; this creates even weight distribution. Locate the items against the back wall of the pack; this keeps the weight close to your body. Food and cooking equipment are typically among the heaviest items in the pack.

    • 3

Load the top of the backpack with lightweight items, and items normally accessed throughout the day. Osprey manufactures top-loading backpacks and rain gear; first-aid kits and snacks are most accessible when placed in the top of the pack.

    • 4

Load the exterior pockets with additional lightweight items accessed throughout the day. GPS units, maps, hats and other items fit into the thin, exterior pockets.

    • 5

Use the cinch straps on the back of the pack to secure snowshoes, ice axes, skis and other odd-shaped pieces of gear. Use the side pockets for water bottles, and equipment that doesn't fit well in the pack.
