How to Use a Brunton Lensatic Military-Style Sighting Compass

Brunton model 9077 lensatic compasses are virtually identical to the compasses used by the U.S. military. These classic compasses are ideal for navigating difficult terrain, as they are easy to read and have a sturdy metal construction. Brunton lensatic compasses use a magnetic disc floating on fluid rather than a magnetized needle like some other lensatic compasses. This allows a more precise reading accurate to within five degrees anywhere in the world. Due to the commonality between Brunton lensatic compasses and those used by the military, two reliable methods of sighting these compasses have been developed: the centerhold method and compass-to-cheek method.

Instructions

  1. Centerhold Method

    • 1

Open the compass completely so the cover and base are even with each other. Move the rear sight back as far as it goes.

    • 2

Hold the compass firmly in both hands with the rear sight against the middle of your chest. The front sight should face away from you.

    • 3

Turn your entire body to point the compass directly at an object then look down at the compass to read the azimuth.

    Compass-to-Cheek Method

    • 4

Open the compass and fold the cover to a 90-degree angle from the dial.

    • 5

Fold the rear sight forward toward the open front sight being sure to align the two.

    • 6

Hold the compass to your cheek steadily and look through the rear sight, aligning the front sight with a distant object. While holding the compass to your cheek, look down at the dial to read the azimuth.
