How to Be Confident in the Saddle

Horseback riding is an excellent way for both adults and children to learn self-control, poise and how to interact with animals. Unfortunately, a fall or other unsettling experience on a horse will shake a person's confidence, and may even make a person give up the sport altogether. There are several ways for any novice or expert equestrian to boost his confidence and get back in the saddle again.

Instructions

    • 1

Ask a seasoned rider that you trust to walk alongside the horse while you are riding. This person will also keep his hand on the horse or the reins as well. This will give you extra security on the horse to know there is someone there to help with the horse.

    • 2

Choose a horse that is gentle and has a good reputation for your first few rides. Avoid horses that are younger or are known to be wild. As you become more confident on the horse, pick animals that are more challenging to ride. This will also boost your confidence because you will be conquering your fear of riding horses that are more difficult to control.

    • 3

Lean back and take a relaxed posture while you are riding the horse. Do not tense your muscles or hold your breath while you are riding. Instead, breathe deeply and enjoy the experience.

    • 4

Talk to the horse while you are riding. Keep the conversation light and praise the horse to keep your mind focused on having fun. Speaking to the horse will also keep it more attentive to your voice, which will make it react more quickly to commands.

    • 5

Ride in a group with several other more experienced equestrians. Ask questions during the ride and listen to their guidance about the horse.

    • 6

Learn how to fall the correct way, which involves letting go of the reins, falling in a roll and remaining calm. Being prepared for this unwanted outcome will make you feel more confident about the possibility of falling off the horse.
