Traps & Techniques of Big Game Hunting
-
Hunting Stands
-
Hunting stands are a popular way to hunt big game such as deer. A hunting stand can be as simple as an elevated platform. Most hunting stands come with a roof to make them usable in any weather. Some hunting stands come equipped with comfortable seats and heaters for hunting in winter. Hunting stands should be somewhat comfortable because you'll often spend hours in them waiting for big prey to come your way. Many hunters place hunting stands where game passes regularly. Some hunting stands are located near feeders, guaranteeing that game will pass by at least once a day for a guaranteed meal.
Spot and Stalk
-
Modern hunting equipment such as hunting stands and ground blinds has overshadowed the ancient art of spot and stalking. Still, for hunters who have the time and passion to learn this art, there is great reward. Hunters use both guns and bows in spot and stalk hunting and will often utilize accessories such as scents for attracting big game to the hunting location. Once an animal is spotted, the hunter must attempt to close the gap to take the animal. Animals can also be taken as they are laying down if the hunter spots them when they are bedded. Whether the animal is on the move or bedded, a successful kill depends on the hunter's skill and ability.
Big Game Traps
-
Traps are often used for hunting big game. Traps do not kill the animal, but hold it until the hunter returns. For traps you will also need a staking system so that once the trap has closed around the animal it can't escape. Many states have specific laws about which traps may be used legally. Traditionally trapping has been used for capturing fur-bearing animals such as beaver and fox, but big game traps are also utilized for capturing animals such as bears. Traps can be baited using food or made appealing to animals by using a scent specific to the animal you are targeting with the trap.
