How to Remove the Bolt From the Steyr SBS 96

The SBS 96 Scout is an all-purpose bolt-action rifle produced by Austrian arms manufacturer Steyr-Mannlicher GmbH. The Scout uses the same "Safe Bolt System" bolt and chamber design as Steyr's more expensive rifles, and is available chambered for the .243 Remington, 7mm-08 Remington and .308 Winchester cartridges. All Steyr rifles that use the Safe Bolt System feature a bolt that unlocks easily and safely to speed removal of the bolt for cleaning and regular maintenance.

Instructions

Move the safety to the "Load" position. The safety is on the upper rear receiver, just behind the bolt. Depress the gray locking button and roll the safety forward slightly until the white dot appears at the top of the safety switch.

    • 2

Press in the magazine catch, on the right side of the receiver just above the magazine, and remove the magazine from the rifle.

Pull the bolt handle up and back to eject any chambered round of ammunition. Visually inspect the ejection port to ensure that the rilfe is unloaded.

    • 4

Push the bolt forward, but do not lock it down. Roll the safety switch toward you into the "Safe" position, where the gray locking button appears at the top of the switch.

    • 5

Grab the bolt handle and rotate the bolt to the 70-degree "unlocked" position. Pull the bolt backward and out of the receiver.
