Measure your height with a tape measure and record this number.

Select an appropriate bow length. Bow length is the bow's height when it's standing on one end. The bow should be no more than four inches above or below your height. If the bow is too long, its bottom may snag on the ground when in use.

Determine an appropriate brace height. Brace height is the distance between the grip and bowstring, and while this height should be between 6 and 10 inches, the optimal distance is dependent upon what you are most comfortable with. Grip the bow with one hand and grab the bowstring with the other. Stretch the bowstring back as if you are about to shoot. You shouldn't feel any discomfort or pain when doing this; if you are struggling, the brace height is too high.
