How to Level a Reticle

A gun scope mounted on a rifle can greatly increase your aim when used properly. To allow for the improvement in your accuracy, you must first adjust the scope. Without this primary adjustment, along with occasional readjustment, the scope could even become a hindrance to your firing aim. By following the proper procedure to level your scope reticle you can hit your targets in short time.

Instructions

Hold the gun in a normal firing positions and look through your scope to examine the viewable area. The area visible is called the exit pupil of the scope. The best result is being able to see only the target without seeing any of the inside scope. If your target area through the scope includes the presence of the inside scope, adjust the physical position of the scope, such as physically moving the gun.

Look at your target area again, but now focus on the reticle of your scope. Now that the scope area is good, you need to see where your bullets will hit in relation to the reticle. Aim the reticle at some point on your target.

Shoot a few bullets into the target and see how far off they hit compared to your reticle.

Depending on your scope type, you need to adjust or level your reticle until you can shoot as closely to the reticle aim as possible. For red dot scopes you can adjust two different knobs on top of the sight. One knob controls the height of the reticle and the other controls the horizontal position of the reticle. For other scopes you can loosen the bottom of the scope, also called the mount, and slide it forwards and backwards until you feel you have a good line.

Take a few more shots to see if your reticle is as level as it can be. A level reticle allows you to aim using your reticle and be very accurate at your target. Readjustment are normally made several more times.
