How to Season a Black Powder Barrel
Muzzleloaders are an older design of rifle that require you to drop the round and the black powder down the front of the muzzle, fire the gun and then repeat the procedure. Because of that maintenance, many people don't prefer them to modern, more efficient weaponry. However, some hunters enjoy them because they have a hunting window in some states like Alabama where only muzzleloaders are permitted, lowering the number of hunters in the woods and increasing the odds of getting larger game. The barrel of the weapon must be seasoned regularly, which is a simple process.
Things You'll Need
- Bore brush
- Seasoning patch

1
Wipe down the outside of the barrel with a seasoning patch to remove any dirt or excess lubrication. Slide a bore brush down the inside of the barrel to remove any larger deposits of powder left over from the previous shot.
-
2
Wrap a seasoning patch around the bore brush so the clean side is facing out.
-
3
Push the brush with the seasoning patch around it down into the barrel and move it back and forth to clean out residue.
-
4
Repeat this process after every shot prior to loading another round. You should be able to get at least 25 accurate shots out of the weapon using this method without needing to clean it outright. Once the accuracy starts to suffer, the gun will need a full cleaning.
