1
Put the mouth call completely inside your mouth, with the open end facing out. The mouth call should be touching the roof of your mouth and you should still be able to close your teeth and move your tongue up and down. Practice shifting the call in your mouth, from cheek-to-cheek. This process may take some time, but comfort with the mouth call is essential to accurate turkey calls.
-
2
Exhale the letter "H" with the call in your mouth. The call should emit a squealing sound. Your tongue will press against the bottom of the read when you do this. Practice by using more and less pressure with your tongue on the reed to produce different sounds. More pressure will produce a higher pitched sound, and less pressure will produce a lower pitched sound.
-
3
Create a "yelp" sound by holding the higher pitched squeal from the previous step for approximately two seconds and then opening your mouth, which should produce a lower pitched sound. Practice this until you can do it quickly.
-
4
Combine previously learned sounds to make a "kee kee run," which is approximately four high pitched squeals followed by two yelps.
