How to Care for Old Hair on Tanned Hides

Tanned hides are prone to hair loss after abuse and exposure to the elements, but properly tanned hides are durable and the hair does not fall out easily. Caring for the hide through caution and preventative maintenance will keep the hair intact for years. Cow, bison and bear hide are especially durable. But elk, deer and antelope hides are more prone to hair loss. Smaller game animal hides are also more difficult to preserve. Maintaining the hair and the hide is a simple process.

Instructions

    • 1

Store the hide in a dry, indoor location to preserve the hair. Prevent contact with moisture to avoid bacterial growth and hair loss.

    • 2

Hang the hide on a wall or drape it on furniture for minimum contact and abuse. Rug hides wear quickly and the hair will eventually separate from the skin.

    • 3

Clean and dust the hair with a low pressure vacuum and dry towel. Do not use chemicals to clean the hair or hide. The chemicals cause the hair to deteriorate and fall off the skin.

    • 4

Hang the hide in a low light area. Long periods of direct contact with sunlight increases wear on the hair.

    • 5

Soak a towel in warm water and ring out as much water as possible. This leaves the towel lightly dampened. Lightly wipe the hair following its natural direction. This removes dust and increases shine without creating water damage.
