Ice skating rinks provide enjoyment for the entire family and are a necessity for anyone who desires to play ice hockey or participate in competitive skating. The trouble for many is that rinks are difficult to locate, but Mooresville, North Carolina, as three rinks within an hour's drive. Two are in the Charlotte area, and one is in Winston-Salem.

    • Located 20 miles south of Mooresville in Pineville, North Carolina, this ice skating rink has been a part of suburban Charlotte since 1995. The facility offers public skating and plans gatherings for groups and fund raising. The Ice House offers several programs. The basic skills programs for age 3 to adult provide basic instruction. The Bridge Program is designed for intermediate skaters looking to hone their skills. A one-hour class includes rotations and jump and spin moves. Private lessons are also available. The Ice House also features youth and adult hockey and the Silver Star Figure Skating Club, which provides power and conditioning classes for participants.The pro shop offers gear such as skates, hockey equipment and equipment storage. The Ice House also offers camps for figure skating and hockey along with an annual summer camp for kids.

    Extreme Ice Center

    • The 87,000-square-foot skating rink features two National Hockey League regulation rinks and one smaller rink. The skate facility offers daily public ice skating. A live DJ provides the music for skating on Friday and Saturday nights. The rink is also available for parties. A full arcade, pro shop, snack bar and 3,000-square-foot fitness center are also housed in the building. Broomball, a winter sport similar to hockey, has been a part of the ice center since 2007. Teams compete in the Carolina Broomball League. The rink offers basic skating lessons for everyone. Separate lessons are available for young children, teens and adults. The rink also offers hockey and figure skating programs.

    Winston-Salem Sports Complex

    • Located 60 miles northeast of Mooresville, the Winston-Salem Sports Complex offers daily public ice skating at the Joel Coliseum Annex. Lessons are also available. In addition to open skating, the complex hosts youth and adult hockey and competitive ice skating via the Trial Ice skating team. The facility is located less than one mile from Interstate 40.
