How to Troubleshoot a Yamaha Jet Ski Ignition

Yamaha may be better known for their motorcycles, but they also make several different jet skis for recreational use on the water. Taking your Yamaha jet ski onto the water is a great way to enjoy a day at the lake, but if your jet ski doesn't start, a day of fun can quickly turn into a day of frustration. If you turn your jet ski on and get no response, there may be a problem with the ignition. Before taking your jet ski to a service shop, take a few minutes and troubleshoot the problem yourself.

Instructions

Make sure that the security system is turned off by pressing the "L-Mode" button on your remote control. The security system will beep two or three times and the security indicator light will blink.

    • 2

Release the throttle on the jet ski. The unit will not start if the throttle is squeezed.

    • 3

Confirm that the safety clip is properly attached to the engine cut-off switch next to the throttle on the left side of the handlebars. The engine will not turn on if the clip is removed.

    • 4

Check all the fuses under the seat in the engine compartment and make sure that they are in good shape. If you look at the fuse and it looks burnt or the metal in the middle of the fuse is broken, then the fuse is blown. In this case, replace the fuse.

Check the battery under the seat and verify that the connections are attached properly and that they are clean. Your battery could also be dead. Charge the battery with a set of jumper cables.
