How to Paddle an SOT Kayak

1
Hold the paddle using both hands, with a space in between about the same width of your shoulders. Too much space between your hands requires too much energy expenditure, which can tire you out quickly; too little or too narrow spacing doesn't give enough strength in your stroke. Knuckles should be pointed up while one of the blades is in the vertical position.
-
2
Do the forward stroke by dipping the paddle on one side of the boat. Allow one side of the paddle to catch a blade's worth of water. If dipping the blade on your right side, your rib cage's right side should be angled toward the front.
-
3
Rotate your upper body as the paddle pushes the water behind you. Reduce fatigue by using the core muscles of your torso to push past the blade instead of pulling the blade through the water with your arms.
-
4
Prepare for and execute the next stroke as the paddle comes out of the water. Do the forward stroke in a continuous and simultaneous motion. If dipping the blade on your left side, angle your torso's left side toward the front. Rotate the torso smoothly as you push with your upper hand and pull with your lower hand.
