River Kayak Trip Checklist

A river kayak trip is an ideal way to relax and enjoy nature with an ever-changing view. Kayaks are small boats that seat one or two passengers, have precise maneuverability and little storage for gear. Preparing supplies for a kayak river trip will depend on the length of your journey and your desired level of comfort.
  1. Repair Kit

    • A small repair kit is essential on any kayak trip, especially when navigating remote areas. A kayak repair kit should include epoxy, plastic repair sections, scissors and duct tape to repair cracks or holes caused from rocks or running aground. Small hand tools, spare screws and bolts will repair any missing parts and breaks along the way.

    Gear

    • Bringing the right gear on your river kayak trip will allow for a safe, relaxing time. A lightweight, sturdy paddle will reduce fatigue and prevent damage. Kayakers should use a paddle tether which connects the paddle to either the boat or kayak in case of an accident. A section of rope and a small anchor allow you to rest while on the river or hold your place while fishing by tying off to the bank or anchoring in slow water.

    Clothing

    • Always pack enough clothes to cover all weather conditions. A long sleeve shirt, pants and jacket, along with extra socks, swim suit and shoes, will allow you to be comfortable in any conditions. Pack all the clothing in a watertight bag and store it securely in the kayak.

    First Aid Kit

    • A waterproof first aid kit does not take up much room, and can be beneficial for any accidents and situations that arise along your trip. It should include antibiotic cream, waterproof bandages, bug spray, sunscreen and pain reliever. Water purification tablets make an ideal addition to the kit in case you run out of clean water and have to drink the river water. The kit is a good place to store all of your personal medications that you will need for the days you will be on the river.

    Camping Supplies

    • On multi-day river trips camping along the bank can add to the adventure. Gear you will need includes a tent, sleeping bag or pad, garbage bags and all necessary cooking utensils. Waterproof matches are essential for building a campfire.
