What Are Recreational Kayaks?
-
Open-Top Kayaks
-
Most open-top kayaks are a form of touring kayak, and are constructed to be quite stable. They provide an excellent choice for paddling on calm water. While most have room for one or two paddlers, many size variations exist for more paddlers or for cargo space. Sit-on-top kayaks enable paddlers to easily get in and out of the water, and to change positions. Sit-on-top models exist for more specialized kayaking, and include surf kayaks, river runners and sea kayaks.
Using a Recreational Kayak
-
Basic recreational kayaks are designed to be safe and easy to navigate. The true recreational boat has a greater width-to-length ratio than its more advanced cousins, making it more difficult to capsize. In the event a capsize occurs, the open-top recreational boat is virtually unsinkable and can easily be righted. Despite the ease of use, new kayakers should practice capsizing, righting, and re-entering the boat in safe conditions before venturing into open water.
Sea Kayaks
-
Many more advanced models also can be considered recreational kayaks, including sea kayaks and whitewater kayaks. The sea kayak is designed for use on open water, including large lakes and oceans. Built to travel long distances, the sea kayak is streamlined for straight-line paddling, and usually contains cargo room for camping gear and supplies. Sea kayaks come in a variety of sizes and capacities, fitting from one to three paddlers along with cargo. Many sea kayaks use rudders attached to foot pedals to aid steering.
Whitewater Kayaks
-
Whitewater kayaking has become increasingly popular, along with other forms of extreme sports. Modern whitewater kayaks come in a variety of styles, including river runners, play boats, and creek boats. Essentially, a kayaker's choice in boats will depend on the types of rivers being run. Within a short time, a new kayaker can gain adequate skill to run Class II or even Class III rivers. A river runner provides a versatile option. Those wanting to surf river waves and do tricks might be more interested in a play boat, a shorter boat with a flatter bottom. A creek boat is for more advanced kayakers running shallow rivers and creeks, which contain more obstacles.
