Kayak Fishing on the Texas Coast

Kayaks have been made by natives of arctic Asia, North America and Greenland since 1,000 AD. These boats were constructed of a wooden frame with seal-skin hulls. Now composite kayaks are used on the Texas Gulf Coast for freshwater and saltwater fishing.
  1. Regulations

    • The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department requires kayaks have one life jacket per passenger. If the kayak is on the water between sunset and sunrise, a lantern or flashlight visible to any other boater is required.

    Simplicity

    • The kayak's simplicity is the key to its popularity. It is easy to own and navigate. It has a low draft and noise level, allowing anglers to approach fish without spooking them.

    Kayak Fishing Tournament

    • The Third Coast Kayak Fishing Series is a nonprofit organization devoted to kayak fishing, youth education and natural resource development. The series uses entry fees to fund its objectives. The fish are caught, photographed and released.

    Tip

    • Even though Texas does not require kayakers register their kayaks, they are required to have valid fishing licenses.
