How to Right an Overturned Kayak
Righting a kayak is a maneuver that every kayaker should know. A common move, known as the "sweep roll," requires relatively minimal effort and can save your life in a pinch. Remember, you must perform this move when you're upside-down in the water. Practice in a safe area with a partner nearby, just in case your initial attempts fail.

1
Lean forward and off to the left of the kayak. Your head should nearly touch the kayak.
-
2
Stick your hands out of the water on the left side. Hold the paddle parallel to the kayak.
-
3
Sweep with your right hand along the left side of the kayak. Keep your head near the surface of the water, so the kayak comes underneath you.
-
4
Perform a hip snap while you sweep the paddle. Drive your right knee into the top of the kayak and force your left butt cheek into the seat. This will make the left side of the kayak heavier than the right side. The weight shift should right the kayak.
-
5
Brace yourself with your paddle and straighten your back. Recover your balance and paddle away.
