How to Make Left-Handed Lay-Ups

In a basketball game, you won't always have the choice as to which side of the basket you want to approach for a lay-up. Constricted time or an opposing player could force you to the left side of the basket, even though you're right-hand dominant. Don't be tempted to perform this lay-up with your right hand. Knowing and practicing a left-handed lay-up gives you more confidence and a better chance of making the shot when you're in a pinch.

Instructions

    • 1

Dribble with your left hand. Approach the basket from the left side of the court. The exact angle of approach depends upon what feels comfortable and what is available.

    • 2

Start your last three steps with the right foot. Cut the distance to the basket in half with a left-foot step, then step with the right foot again.

    • 3

Spring from the right foot, pushing through your heel and then off the toe. Push your left knee up to create a right angle.

    • 4

Aim for the top left corner of the red box on the backboard. Push the ball upward with the back of your hand facing you until your arm completely straightens. As your elbow locks, straighten your wrist and push the ball with your fingertips.

    • 5

Land on your right foot, then bring your left foot down and to the side to balance yourself.
