How to Calculate Length of Kayak Paddles

1
Determine the appropriate paddle length for your height. To do this, Stand next to your paddle while holding it in a vertical position. While still holding the paddle upright, take your free hand and try to reach it over the top of the paddle. If the paddle is the right length, your fingers will just be able to curl around the top of the paddle.

2
Factor in the width of your kayak. If your kayak is the normal width (50 to 65 centimeters wide) you do not need to make any adjustments. If your kayak is wider than this however, you should plan to add at least 1 or 2 centimeters of additional length to accommodate for the extra reaching distance.

3
Factor in your paddling preferences. Those who are are more concerned with reducing drag generally choose slightly shorter paddles, while those who are more concerned with a full-bodied stroke tend toward paddles which are a little longer. There is a lot of debate over which of these two approaches is most effective, so ultimately the choice is up to you.
