How to Paddle a Boat

There are as many ways to paddle a boat as there are types of boats. The techniques used to paddle a kayak differ from those used in a canoe or in a team rowing competition. The most basic techniques allow you to move from one point to another in a straight line with little difficulty. You can become proficient in the techniques to paddle your chosen watercraft with a little bit of practice.

Instructions

  1. Kayak

    • 1

Place your hands on the paddle about shoulder width apart. The length of the paddle should be equal from each hand to the end of the paddle.

    • 2

Reach forward with one hand and place the blade of the paddle in the water at a point that is even with your toes.

    • 3

Pull the blade back toward you until it is even with your hip. Repeat the process on the other side to keep going straight.

    Canoe

    • 4

Sit up straight and grip the paddle with both hands. One hand should be on the end of the paddle, for guidance, while the other hand is near the blade.

    • 5

Keep the blade nearly perpendicular to the water as it enters. Keep the top end of the paddle in front of your face. Drag the blade through the water until it is slightly behind you, keeping the top end away from your body for maximum control.

    • 6

Finish the stroke with the thumb on your top hand pointed toward the water and the paddle held straight up and down. Use the paddle as a rudder to control the direction of the boat. Repeat the process on the other side and keep paddling until you reach your destination.
