How to Stretch a Spray Skirt

A spray skirt is a crucial piece of kayaking equipment. The skirts are designed to go around your midriff and fit snugly over the cockpit combing. When you get a new spray skirt you might notice that it is difficult to get it onto the cockpit combing. This is because the fabric has not being stretched out to easily fit over the combing. Getting it stretched out is a necessary component to the gear and is easily done with very little effort.

Instructions

Wait for a hot, sunny day and then dip the spray skirt into the water to get it soaked. Spread the spray skirt onto the kayak combing and leave it exposed to the sun for a few hours.

    • 2

Remove the spray skirt and dip it back into the water. Place it back onto the combing and leave it in a garage or storage area overnight. You will begin to notice a slight stretch to the spray skirt as you leave it on the combing, forcing the material to stretch into the shape of your kayak's cockpit.

Wear the skirt and paddle with it on. Remove it and put it back on the combing several times during your paddling session and store it on the kayak combing when done.

    • 4

Pull the spray skirt bungees to tighten it around the combing as it begins to stretch, thus ensuring the water-resistant seal.
