Rigid Fork Vs. Suspension
-
Weight
-
Suspension adds weight to a bike. Depending on the situation, this weight can be beneficial or detrimental. When racing or pedaling uphill, the added weight will slow you down. However, you will pick up more speed when traveling downhill. Weight also can present problems when you try to transport or stow the bike.
Suspension Maintenance
-
Bike suspensions must be maintained from time to time. Oil in the suspension must be changed periodically. O-rings and seals must be checked and replaced as well. According to MTB Britain you should not buy a suspension bike if you are unable to maintain it.
Comfort
-
Suspension absorbs more shock. This can make a rocky ride more comfortable, which can translate into better endurance on long rides. While many mountain bikers love suspension forks for these reasons, just as many believe you don't really need suspension and have the attitude of "suspensions are for sissies."
Cost
-
Suspension forks add cost to a bike. Bike prices will vary from one manufacturer to the next. Different features and styles also will impact the price. Suspension forks may add several hundred dollars to the price of a bike. Before you spend the extra money for suspension forks, consider what you'll be using the bike for. Many people use mountain bikes as an everyday bike to commute to and from work. If your primary terrain is city streets, you probably don't really need suspension forks.
