How to Take Forks Off a Bike
Changing the forks on your bicycle is a needed step if upgrading the suspension or simply doing an overhaul to the bike. Removing the front forks can be done within a few minutes with basic bicycle tools. This task can be done in your own workshop.
Things You'll Need
- Bike work stand
- Cutters
- Allen keys
Instructions
-
-
1
Place the bike in the work stand by clamping the bike stand arm around the seat post.
-
2
Cut off any zip ties or cable ties on the fork of the bike.
-
3
Remove the brakes of the fork using the allen keys. Let the brakes hang off the bike via the brake cables.
-
4
Unscrew the handlebar stem from the top of the fork and bike frame. If there is a headset cap use the allen key to remove. Hold the fork with your free hand when removing the stem so the fork doesn't fall out.
-
5
Pull the series of washers off the top of the fork and set aside making a note of their order.
-
6
Pull the fork out of the frame from the bottom of the fork holder.
