How to Take Forks Off a Bike

Changing the forks on your bicycle is a needed step if upgrading the suspension or simply doing an overhaul to the bike. Removing the front forks can be done within a few minutes with basic bicycle tools. This task can be done in your own workshop.

  • Bike work stand
  • Cutters
  • Allen keys

Instructions

      Place the bike in the work stand by clamping the bike stand arm around the seat post.

      Cut off any zip ties or cable ties on the fork of the bike.

      Remove the brakes of the fork using the allen keys. Let the brakes hang off the bike via the brake cables.

      Unscrew the handlebar stem from the top of the fork and bike frame. If there is a headset cap use the allen key to remove. Hold the fork with your free hand when removing the stem so the fork doesn't fall out.

      Pull the series of washers off the top of the fork and set aside making a note of their order.

      Pull the fork out of the frame from the bottom of the fork holder.
