How to Loosen Bike Brakes

The last thing a cyclist needs when climbing a steep hill is a little extra friction from the brake pads, and nobody wants to be involved in an accident caused by overly touchy brakes. Rubbing brakes can prematurely wear the pads, and while vibration might not be outright dangerous or destructive, it can still ruin a perfectly good ride. All of these issues can result from overly tight bicycle brakes. Bicycle brakes can be loosened either by cable adjustment, or with an adjusting barrel. Either is effective, but the barrel is much simpler.

Instructions

  1. Loosening Brakes by Cable Adjustment

    • 1

Locate the holding bolt by following the brake cable to the caliper.

    • 2

Grip the bolt with the adjustable wrench and place the socket wrench over the nut.

    • 3

Turn the nut counter clockwise until the brake cable moves freely.

    • 4

Adjust the caliper. Make sure there is at least 1/8 inch between the brake pads and the rim.

    • 5

Pull the cable tight with the pliers and hold it firm.

    • 6

Use the hand holding the pliers to steady the adjustable wrench against the holding bolt and tighten the nut with the socket wrench.

    • 7

Squeeze the hand grips hard to check for cable slippage. If the cable slips, adjust the brakes again and be sure to tighten the bolt further.

Loosening Brakes Using an Adjusting Barrel

    • 8

Locate the adjusting barrel on either the hand grip or the caliper.

    • 9

Loosen the locking nut and turn the adjusting barrel until the brake pads are at least 1/8 inch from the rim.

    • 10

      Tighten the locking nut.

    • 11

Squeeze the hand brake hard and recheck the adjustment of the caliper.
