How to Release Disc Brake Rotors on a Mountain Bike
A mountain bike is designed for rugged uneven terrain travel; however, after many rides, you might need to remove your rotors for maintenance. The rotors of a mountain bike are circular discs with numerous small holes along the rotor. The holes help to drain away water and dirt that would otherwise ruin the disc brake system. If the rotor does become damaged, you'll notice rubbing, whistling or improper braking action. These are good indicators for you to release the rotor from the wheel and make an inspection or work on the rotor.

Remove the wheel from your bike. Depending on your bike construction and manufacturer, you might have quick-release axle levers that you can turn to remove the wheel easily. If not, unscrew the axle bolt nut with an adjustable wrench.

2
Lay the wheel on its side, then locate the rotor retaining bolt heads surrounding the center of the rotor. Determine the tool you'll need to unscrew the bolts.

Remove the retaining bolts from the rotor with a hex wrench, then lift the rotor off the wheel.
