How to Build a Bicycle Parking Stand

Not all bicycles come with the basic kickstand to keep it upright when not in use, and not all surfaces allow kickstands to work as they should. It's possible to build a lightweight stand that you can use at home or even take with you to use in other locations such as on a camping trip. The stand is made of PVC pipe that can be broken down when not in use.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 - 2 1/2 foot PVC pipes
  • 6 - Elbow connectors
  • 2 - 5 inch PVC pipes
  • 4 - T connectors
  • 6 - 1 foot pipes
  • 2 - 3 foot pipes

Instructions

    • 1

Attach a 2 1/2 foot PVC pipe to the middle, or top, connection of a PVC T connector. Repeat this with the other T connector. Place the pipes down so that the T connectors lie flat and one of the openings of each is facing the other.

    • 2

Attach an elbow connector to the top of both 2 1/2 foot pipes. Have the open ends of the elbows face each other. Attach a 5 inch pipe to both elbows at the top of the 2 1/2 foot pipes and another 5 inch pipe to the T connector openings at the bottom that are facing each other.

    • 3

Attach a 1 foot pipe to the other ends of the T connectors that are facing out.

    • 4

Stand the PVC pipe construction up so that the 2 1/2 foot pipes are vertical to the floor. This is the part of the bicycle parking stand where you will insert the front wheel. It is shape like a tall thin rectangle with pipes extending out from it at the bottom. The rectangle that holds the wheel will keep the bike vertical. Attach T connectors to the ends of the 1 foot pipes that are on the ground. Attach the pipes to the middle opening of the T connectors so that the other two openings are facing to the front and back of the stand.

    • 5

Attach 1 foot pipe pieces to the openings on the two T Connectors that are facing front and back.

    • 6

Attach elbow connectors to the ends of the 1 foot pipes from Step 5. Have the elbow at the front of the stand face each other, and have the elbows at the back of the stand face each other.

    • 7

Measure the distance between the elbows at the front of the stand. Be sure to include the amount of pipe that will be needed to slide inside the elbow connectors. You can get the inside measurement by inserting a pipe into the elbow and marking the outside of the pipe where the elbow and pipe meet. Pull the pipe back out and measure the distance from the mark to the end of the pipe. Double the pipe insert measurement to account for both ends and add this measurement to the distance between the two elbows.

Cut two pipes to the measurement you came up with in Step 7. One for the front and one for the back. A PVC pipe saw is best, but a circular saw with a masonry blade will work as will a hand saw. Use sandpaper to smooth the cut end.

Insert the pipes cut in Step 7 into the front and back elbows.
