How to Build a Bicycle Repair Stand

Cyclists understand the importance of keeping equipment in good working order. Taking your bike to the shop for frequent tuneups can be expensive and time consuming; consider performing standard tuneups yourself. You can build a solid bicycle repair stand with a few simple tools.

Things You'll Need

  • Metal strapping (2 inches wide)
  • Dremel tool with cutting wheel
  • Bench vise
  • Pliers
  • Foam pipe insulation

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a 28-inch length of metal strapping. Clamp the middle of the strapping into the bench vise leaving 11 inches sticking out from either side.

    • 2

Use the pliers to bend each side of the strapping toward you at 90 degree angles; you should have a C-shaped piece of metal clamped in the vise.

    • 3

Use a Dremel tool to cut a 2 inch notch in the end of each metal arm.

    • 4

Cover the arms of the metal with the pipe insulation (this will keep the metal from scratching your bike's paint job).

    • 5

To use the repair stand, leave the metal "C" clamped in the vise and lift the top tube of the bicycle frame onto the 2-inch notches in the arms.
