How to Build a Bicycle Work Stand With Steel Pipes

Making repairs and adjustments to a bicycle without a repair stand can cause scratches and scrapes to handlebars and saddles. Bike repair stands can be costly. Save your bike, and yourself, from unnecessary strain and damage while saving yourself money by building your own repair stand.

Instructions

  1. Build the Base

    • 1

Screw in one 8-inch pipe into a T-piece. Screw one of the 90-degree elbows onto the other end of the 8-inch pipe. Screw in one 10-inch pipe into the other side of the T-piece, forming a 20-inch length. Screw on an end-cap to the other end of the 10-inch pipe. Repeat this so you have two parts of the base.

    • 2

Take two 10-inch tubes and attach one into either end of a T-piece fitting. Complete the base by attaching this long piece to the open 90-degree elbows of the base.

    • 3

Screw one of the 45-degree elbows onto one end of the 3-inch tube. Attach the other end of the 3-inch tube into the remaining female ends of the T-pieces so they face upward. Repeat this.

    • 4

Form the supports for the stand itself by screwing one of the 18-inch-long pipes into one of the 45-degree elbows. Screw the remaining 90-degree elbow onto the end of the 18-inch pipe. Repeat this on the other side so the two 18-inch pipes form an angle.

    • 5

Complete the base by screwing end-caps onto the open ends of the 10-inch pipes.

Construct the Support and Repair Arm

    • 6

Slip the 48-inch length of pipe through the 90-degree angle formed by the 18-inch-long supports and screw it into the T-piece between the two 10-inch pieces of the base.

    • 7

Attach the remaining 90-degree elbow onto the top end of the 48-inch pipe. Screw in the remaining 10-inch pipe into the 90-degree elbow.

    • 8

Attach the bike repair stand clamp by sliding it into the open end of the 10-inch pipe.
