How to Build MTB Ladders

An MTB---mountain bike---ladder is a wood device over which you can ride your bike like a mini-bridge. They are usually used to ride over a small river or through a rough patch of rocks where a bike shouldn't ride. This project should take about an hour if you have all of the materials and tools ready. This design is for a 10-foot long ladder.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the 10-foot 2-by-4s on the ground running parallel to each other 16 inches apart. Stand them on their skinny side so they are sitting 3 1/2 inches tall. A commercial 2-by-4 actually measures 1 1/2 by 3 1/2 inches.

    • 2

Lay out the individual 18-inch 2-by-4s across the foundation you just lined up with the wide side down; visualize railroad tracks with a board laid across them. Space them out so you can fit all 20 pieces along the ladder's length. The 18-inch 2-by-4s should have about 2 inches of space between them. Make sure they're spaced far enough apart to have all 20 pieces last the entire 10 feet, but close enough that your tire won't slide into the cracks.

    • 3

Hammer in one nail per side on each 18-inch 2-by-4 plank the entire span of the 10-foot length. Each piece should be securely nailed down by two nails and should not move in any way.
