1
Pile the earth to the desired height and gradient with the shovel. The mound should be wedge-shaped, with the ramp ending suddenly at the highest end. A reasonable height is about 3 to 4 feet at the highest point. The width will depend on the intended use, so make it as wide as it needs to be. For mountain biking, 3or 4 feet wide should be adequate.

2
Rake the dirt lengthwise along the ramp making the surface even. Make sure the beginning of the ramp is flush with the ground. Use the rake to shape the ramp, adding a definable lip at the high end by rounding the dirt at the edge and having the dirt suddenly drop off sharply. Discard any large stones found while raking.

3
Use the tamper to firmly pack the dirt. Make sure the dirt is compacted at the lip of the ramp and at the start. If you don't own a tamper, you can also use your feet by walking or stomping on the mound. When you can walk on the ramp without leaving deep foot prints, or you feel the dirt sink beneath your foot, the ramp is firm enough.

4
Water the dirt with the hose, or use buckets of water to do so. A light dampening is sufficient for a firm surface. Don't over water the ramp. If puddles start to form, you have watered it more than enough. Wait for it to dry in so it will completely settle. Avoid walking on the ramp while it is still damp.
