How to Change a Bicycle Saddle

Compared to expensive shocks, lightweight composite frames and top-of-the-line drive train components, the bicycle seat is perhaps the most overlooked component on the bike even though the cyclist is constantly sitting on it. Luckily, changing the bicycle saddle is well within the grasp of any cyclist.

Things You'll Need

  • 5 millimeter Allen wrench (or the proper size wrench for your saddle hardware)

Instructions

    • 1

Look underneath the saddle for two rails that are clamped to the seat post. The clamp will be held in place by one or two Allen screws or bolts.

    • 2

Use the appropriate Allen wrench and turn the screws or bolts counterclockwise to loosen. Do not loosen any other hardware. Do not remove the screws or bolts.

    • 3

Open the clamp once the bolts are loosened. For a one-bolt clamp, rotate the top of the clamp 90 degrees. This will allow you to pull the bicycle saddle off the seat post.

    • 4

Place the rails of the new saddle in the grooves on the clamp. Adjust the position by sliding the saddle back and forth. Adjust the angle by tilting the saddle up and down.

    • 5

Rotate the clamp top 90 degrees back into a closed position (for one-screw or -bolt clamps) once the new saddle is positioned appropriately. Tighten each bolt.
If the hardware includes two screws or bolts, tighten incrementally while alternating between the screws to ensure they're tightened evenly.
