How to Make a Homemade Chipmunk Call

Chipmunks, a member of the rodent family, have been compared to birds with their shrill, chirping call. During mating season, chipmunks will create a symphony of chirps and clucks to attract a mate. Chipmunks are characterized by their small body, stripes down the back and tail, and puffy cheeks. Because chipmunks sound nearly identical to birds, you can use a homemade bird call to imitate chipmunks. Use natural items to create a bird call that emulates the traditional method of cupping your hands around a blade of grass and blowing into it.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a 5-inch length of cattail reed or corn stalk at the thicker end, near the bottom. Cut that piece in half, lengthwise. You should have two vertical halves of a cylinder.

    • 2

Cut a notch 1-inch wide and 1/2-inch deep in the middle of each half so that when they are put back together to make a whole stalk, there is a hole going through the middle. You should be able to blow and see through it. Your mouth should cover the hole entirely when you blow in it.

    • 3

Lay a 5-inch piece of wide grass, longways, between the two halves. Put the halves together.

    • 4

Tie each end with a piece of twine to secure the blade of grass between the halves.

    • 5

Cover the hole on one side of the chipmunk call with your mouth and blow lightly. The vibrations from your breath will create a bird-like sound that can be used to mimic a chipmunk's chirps and clucks.
