How to Hook Up a Go-Kart Throttle Safely

Your go-kart's throttle cable allows the engine to accelerate or decelerate via the carburetor when you push or let off the gas pedal. When this cable malfunctions, your carburetor may be stuck in a “wide open” or full-throttle position. Running the engine in this manner can cause damage to the carburetor or result in catastrophic engine failure. Replacing the throttle cable as soon as you notice an issue is the safest way to prevent engine damage and prolong the life of your cart.

Instructions

    • 1

Position a helper in the driver seat and have him push the accelerator to the floor. This prevents over extension of the throttle cable springs.

    • 2

Disconnect the old throttle cable from the throttle control lever or “butterfly” on the go-kart's carburetor by removing the retaining clip. To remove the retaining clip, grasp the clip on the end and pull it with a pair of needle-nose pliers.

    • 3

Install the end of the new throttle cable to the throttle control lever. Pass the retaining clip through the eye on the throttle cable and butterfly. You will remove the old cable and reinstall the new cable at each point during the installation to prevent mistakes.

    • 4

Trace the old cable from the carburetor toward the accelerator. Remove the old cable from the cable clips holding it to the go-kart frame and slip the new throttle cable into place.

    • 5

Detach the broken throttle cable from the accelerator push rod by removing the retaining clip. Align the new throttle cable and install it with the hardware.
