Broad-Range Algae Control for Swimming Pools
-
Adding Chlorine
-
Chlorine is essential to proper pool maintenance. Chlorine kills germs and algae, and acts as a disinfectant. Chlorine levels should be tested at least twice a week to ensure that proper amounts are present. Test kits are available at all pool and accessory retailers. A small amount of water is placed in the kit and chlorine is measured. The amount of sunlight present on a regular basis will affect the rate at which chlorine is replaced.
Shocking the Pool
-
Shocking the pool is a rapid method of chlorinating designed to destroy bacteria and other contaminates that may not be eradicated with normal chlorination. Shocking involves adding up to five times as much chlorine as the pool would normally require. Shock kits are available at pool retailers or normal chlorine addition amounts can be adjusted by pool owners themselves. When dealing with algae growths, shocking should be the first step; it also helps to prevent algae from forming.
Scrubbing
-
Scrubbing the pool routinely with a soft nylon brush will give you a good start on correcting the algae problem. Some algae strains have caps or coating over them to prevent chemicals from attacking. Scrubbing removes these heads and allows chemicals such as chlorine to do their jobs. Scrubbing when there is no obvious sign of algae growth can help maintain the pool's condition and prevent algae from starting.
Proper Filtering
-
Most pool systems come equipped with a basic filtering system that is designed to be ran continuously. If these systems are not ran in this manner then the bacteria and algae cannot be filtered from the water. Filters need to be maintained, and replaced, according to manufacturers recommendations. For pools with algae infestations, an upgraded filtering system can help reduce the problem.
Adding Algaecides
-
Algaecides are chemicals designed to be added to pools to help with the removal, prevention and eradication of algae growth. They range from potassium tetraborate to copper or silver based solutions, and vary in effectiveness and potency. They work to kill the algae, but work best as preventive treatments.
