How to Stand Up on Your Knees

Paddle boarding is a water sport in which you begin on your knees. Once you stand up, you use your paddle to maneuver through the water. Practice enables you to stand up from the kneeling position without dropping into the water. Paddle boarding works the core muscles and the entire body and it is a relaxing way to enjoy the water and sunshine, and to get exercise.

      Select a wide, flat paddle board to learn the technique.

      Start your paddle boarding experience on your knees in the center of the board. It is best to practice the techniques in calm water that does not have many buoys much boat traffic. Look at the nose and tail section of the board; neither should be sticking out of the water or submerged if you are in the center.

      Paddle the board by using the paddle, alternating on both sides of the board, until you feel comfortable.

      Rise up, one foot at a time, and place your feet on the spots your knees were on the board. Keep your feet away from the sides of the board. Your weight must remain in the center of the board at all times to keep from falling into the water.

      Point your toes straight ahead. Bend your knees slightly and keep your back straight to maintain the proper balance while guiding the paddle board with your paddle.
