Cleaning the Paddles
-
The rubbers on your paddle often collect dust and dirt during play. Once that happens, the paddles will not perform as well. After playing, you should always clean the rubbers. The most common cleaning method is to use a simple sponge and water. A damp sponge should remove most of the dirt and is completely safe for the paddle. Since you're only using water, there is no possibility of damaging the rubber surface. You can also find various rubber cleaning solutions, which are to be applied to the rubber and cleansed with a sponge. However, most people find that water does the job just as well as these cleaning solutions. If you notice that your rubber has a significant buildup of oil from your fingers, you may use a mild detergent to cleanse the rubber. However, this method is a bit more risky, as it poses the potential risk of rubber damage.
Storing Paddles
-
The easiest way to protect your paddle when you are not using it is to store it in a protective case. Although there are a wide variety of paddle cases available, the most popular cases are the ones that protect the entire paddle, not just the head of the paddle. Because most people carry their paddles in a bag with other equipment, these protective cases are absolutely necessary in preventing damage to the paddle. You may also choose to use a rubber protection sheet, which is a sheet of stiff plastic that adheres to the rubber surface of your paddles. This protection sheet keeps dust and dirt from sticking to the rubber when it is in storage.
Additional Tips
-
Many table tennis players also choose to use edge tape, which is a layer of cushioned tape that sticks on the outside edge of the paddle's blade. This cushioned tape protects the blade from splintering or denting if you accidentally knock it against the table or the floor. When playing, it is important to avoid hitting your paddle against any rough objects. Try to position the game away from any walls or large objects, and be conscious of your paddle's distance from the playing table at all times.
