How to Play Advanced Ping Pong

Just about anyone who can hold a paddle can play basic ping pong, but advancing to a higher level is another story. It takes practice and technique, plus concentration and even relaxation. It's great to have a coach who can help you develop your game, but you can succeed without one. Here's how to advance in the world of ping pong.

Instructions

  1. How to Play Advanced Ping Pong

    • 1

Relax your mind and body. Beginners often clutch the paddle, hit too hard and forget to breathe. More advanced players practice a gentler grip, develop more controlled hits and take a breath between plays. One way to relax with the paddle is to put the ball on it and roll it around. This helps develop the skill and concentration you need to advance.

    • 2

Play with your whole body. Make sure your feet, legs, shoulders and chest are in position before you hit the ball. This keeps you from swinging wildly, affords you better control, and protects your arms and wrists.

    • 3

Practice the same skills over and over until you master them. Instead of continually trying something new, stick with one beginning position, one kind of footwork and consistent forehand and backhand shots. Repeating them every time you practice will help your play immensely.

    • 4

Talk to other players at all skill levels. Ask for tips that make those players successful and get feedback on your game. Offer to reciprocate, too. Analyzing other players' games will help you improve yours.

    • 5

Watch yourself in action. If you can, record yourself playing and review your game objectively. While you're at it, screen professional ping pong matches and watch training DVDs. They're filled with ideas you can apply to your game.
