How to Make Easy Lanyards

Lanyards are used to hold a variety of things. Key rings, name badges, whistles, small tools and lights are all items placed on the end of the simple rope devices. Making a simple and easy lanyard takes only a few moments of time and some basic gear. Decorate or alter this simple design to your specific needs with extra rings, loops or colored rope for a custom lanyard.

Things You'll Need

  • Nylon cord - 5mm to 7mm
  • Rope sleeves
  • D-ring or key ring
  • Crimpers or pliers

Instructions

    • 1

Measure out a length of the nylon cord so it makes a loop that hangs around the neck and down to the chest.

    • 2

Push the two ends of the nylon cord through the rope sleeve -- a metal sleeve that holds the rope. Pull the cord ends down so approximately 4 inches are past the sleeve on both ends of the cord.

    • 3

Crimp down the sleeve to secure the cord in this length and position.

    • 4

Tie the ends of the cord to a D-ring or key ring to enclose the loop. Use a square knot, or a Double Fisherman's Bend to secure the ends together (see Resources.)
