How to Replace a Grommet in a Tent

Grommet--not only is it fun to say, it's also an important equipment feature. A grommet is a metal ring placed near the edge of a tent or tarp to provide an attachment point for a rope. With repeated use, it can pull out of the fabric, leaving a hole. To keep the hole from spreading, fix the problem before your next trip to the mountains.

Instructions

    • 1

Inspect the torn grommet. If the grommet has simply popped free of the material, you can set a new grommet in the same spot with no additional repairs. If the material has torn, you'll need to set the replacement grommet in a new spot.

    • 2

Remove the grommet, then repair the hole by following the steps in How to Fix a Torn Tent.

    • 3

Place a board or a piece of cardboard under the area where the new grommet will be located. Set the grommet-cutting tool on the target spot and strike it with a hammer to create a hole.

    • 4

Place the grommet back-piece on the board and insert it through the new hole. Place the grommet front-piece on top of the board.

    • 5

Place the grommet-setting tool on top of the new grommet and tap it several times with the hammer to fold the grommet over on itself and form a tight fit.

    • 6

Inspect the grommet and continue using the hammer as needed.
